Dr. Kara Shirley is a native of Saltsburg, Pennsylvania, and a 2003 graduate of Kiski Area High School. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Biology, graduating magna cum laude from Saint Vincent College in 2007. During her time at Saint Vincent, Dr. Shirley was recognized as an Academic All-American in Women’s Cross Country and was a national qualifier in four events in Women’s Swimming. Her commitment to service was acknowledged at the national level when she was mentioned by President George W. Bush during his commencement address for her contributions to the community.
Following her undergraduate studies, Dr. Shirley earned both a Bachelor of Science in Visual Sciences and a Doctorate of Optometry from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, graduating with Highest Honors in 2011. She was inducted into the Beta Sigma Kappa Optometric Honor Society for her academic excellence.
During her optometric training, Dr. Shirley completed a clinical rotation at Armstrong Eye Care, where she has continued to practice ever since. In 2014, she became a partner in the practice with its former owner, Dr. Paul Lobby, and in 2019, she acquired full ownership. Dr. Shirley has a strong clinical interest in the management of dry eye disease and other ocular conditions.
Outside of her professional responsibilities, Dr. Shirley is an avid runner and frequently participates in local 5K races and the Pittsburgh Marathon. She resides in Oakmont with her husband—who is also an optometrist—and their two children, Lena and John.
